What Is Free Point?
In boreholes, sometimes the drill pipe becomes stuck; typically due to mutual influences of formation pressure and properties of the drilling fluid. In order to solve the situation, special equipment is required which must be connected to the drill string as close as possible to the stuck point. The first step in solving such a problem is to determine the stuck point/free point within the drill string.
A similar case is the retrieval of tubing or casing which is damaged or no longer required due to e.g. Low production. The free-point must be determined to recover as much as possible of the valuable material.
Free point instruments can typically sense movements in the axial direction and they can sense any torque applied to the drill pipe/tubing/casing. Such movements are induced by pulling and/or torque the respective string at the surface.
